Privacy Policy

Font detection happens entirely in your browser, against the DOM of the page you're on. Typus only contacts our servers to sign you in, check your plan and, on Pro, sync your library.

Last updated 6 October 2026 · Effective immediately

Short version: Typus reads fonts from the page you're on. We never receive the pages you visit. We only receive your account email, your plan status and, on Pro, the fonts you choose to sync. The extension stores your saved fonts and clips locally in Chrome. Two optional features send data to someone else, and only after you turn them on in the extension's Keys tab: Scan sends a cropped image of a screen region to WhatFontIs, and Talk sends your question and the font details on screen to the AI provider you choose. Both are off by default, and neither goes through us.

1. What Typus Is

Typus is a Chrome browser extension that inspects the fonts used on any web page. It runs as a content script injected into the current tab and reads CSS computed styles using the browser's own APIs. It does not record your browsing history or send page content to us. The only time it captures part of a page's pixels is when you use Scan on an image, and that clip leaves your browser only if you have turned on image identification (see section 3).

This policy covers:

2. Font Detection

Font detection is entirely local. When you hover over or highlight text:

The result — font family, size, weight, line-height, computed colour, letter-spacing — is displayed in the widget overlay and optionally saved to chrome.storage.local on your device.

3. Image-Based Font Identification (Scan)

The Scan feature lets you capture a region of the screen where text is an image rather than selectable text, and match it to a typeface.

WhatFontIs API (optional) A cropped image of the screen region you select, and your IP address WhatFontIs.com
Their privacy policy applies.

The WhatFontIs call is made from the extension background worker (not from our servers), using your own WhatFontIs API key entered in the extension's Keys tab, so the cropped image and your IP address go directly to WhatFontIs and are not routed through Typus infrastructure. It only happens when you have turned on "Send clips to WhatFontIs" in the Keys tab (it is off until you do) and you choose to identify a captured region. No switch, no key, no request. The clip is also kept as a small thumbnail on your device.

4. Local Storage

By default, Typus stores everything in Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local) on your own device. This includes:

This data lives only on the device where the extension is installed. It is not backed up by Typus and is deleted if you uninstall the extension.

5. Accounts, Plan Checks and Cloud Sync

Typus is a paid product. Your account is created on this website when you subscribe, and the extension signs in to it. We use Supabase as our backend (hosted on AWS). We store:

What we storeWhereWhy
Email address Supabase Auth (your password is stored hashed) Sign-in, password reset emails, matching your payment to your account
Font library entries (Pro sync only) Supabase database Cross-device sync
Subscription status Supabase database (synced from Stripe) Deciding whether Typus is switched on and which limits apply (checked at sign-in and periodically)

We do not store browsing history, page content, or any data about which websites you visit. Sync is pull-on-open and push-on-save; the background worker only syncs when you have an active session.

You can ask us to export or delete your account data at any time by emailing info@typusfonts.com. We will process requests within 30 days. Daily usage counters (for example Talk and image-identification counts) are kept only on your device.

6. Payments and Billing

Paid subscriptions are handled by Stripe. Typus never sees or stores your card number. Stripe is PCI DSS Level 1 certified.

When you pick a plan on typusfonts.com we first ask for your email, a password and optionally your name. The email (and name, if given) is passed to Stripe checkout so the payment matches your account. Your password is held only in your browser's memory, is never sent to Stripe, and is sent to our server only after Stripe confirms your payment and the subscription is active. We then create your account and Supabase stores the password hashed. If you do not complete payment, no account is created and what you typed is discarded.

We receive from Stripe: your billing email, subscription status, plan tier, and renewal dates. These are used solely to gate Pro features.

Stripe's privacy policy applies to payment processing.

7. AI Chat (Talk)

The Talk feature lets you ask questions about the detected font using an AI assistant. Talk is opt-in: it needs your own API key for the provider you choose and you must turn on "Send questions to my AI provider" in the extension's Keys tab. It is off until you do.

Requests are made directly from the extension background worker to the provider's API endpoint. They do not pass through Typus servers. Your API keys are stored locally and never transmitted to us.

If you have not turned Talk's sending switch on or have not supplied an API key, Talk uses a small set of local answers for common questions and no network request is made.
